We know the importance of sustainable, locally produced food and agriculture.  Charlie Mitch of the Winding Waters Group offers some things to think about when looking at farms in your area. 

 

1)      Methods of production

          a.       Treatment of animals

                         Source of animals

                         Free range vs. confined

                         Feed source

                         Antibiotic free

                         Hormone free

                         How much manure is produced and how is it disposed of

                         Humane methods of euthanasia

b.      Vegetable and fruit production

                        Source of seeds

                        Use of genetically modified seeds

                        Certified organic

                        Use and source of pesticides

                        Use and source of fertilizers

                        Tillage processes

                        Integrated livestock, poultry, pasture and crop production

2)      Outlets for products

a.       Advance ordering

d.      Home delivery
